Enterprise very Own Kamesh Yadram Captain for the Demerara Team GTM U-19 Inter-County - Competition set to resume tomorrow … ‘Young Tiger’ replaces Travis Persaud in Demerara lineup PDF Print E-mail Written by Calvin Roberts Wednesday, 19 June 2013 21:23 FOR THE 36th consecutive year, the Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Group of Companies (GTM) has seen it fit to partner with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) by sponsoring that entity’s Under-19 Inter-County three-day and limited overs competition. That tournament, which is being contested among four teams, namely GT&T Berbice, Demerara, Essequibo and a President’s XI, was set to bowl off on April 23 with two matches in the three-day format, but could not do so, due to consistent showers. The GTM Group is a leading insurance provider in Guyana and in the Caribbean islands of Grenada, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines, and was established in 1880, while being known for providing solid and reliable insurance service in Guyana and the various Caribbean islands. The competition, which will be contested in a round-robin scenario with action taking place at the Everest Cricket Club, Wales Community Centre, Demerara Cricket Club, Georgetown Cricket Club and the Enmore Community Centre grounds, is being sponsored to the tune of $3 875 000. Two matches will be played simultaneously in each round and tomorrow’s action pits President’s XI against GT&T Berbice at Everest while perennial whippings boys Essequibo will face Demerara at Police, with both matches commencing at 10:00hrs. Talented left-handed first class opener, the 17-year-old Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who recently returned from a successful stint with Stainsby Hall Cricket Club in England, replaces national Under-17 skipper Travis Persaud in the Demerara lineup for tomorrow’s action. Persaud, Keanu Harry, Shimron Hetmyer and Essequibo’s Under-17 skipper Kemo Paul, were all named in their respective county lineup, when the competition was set to bowl off the first time around. However, with their selection to the National Under-17 team which will be competing in the West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional tournament in Tobago, replacements were sought to fill the void their absence would have created. Kamesh Yadram, who was named as Persaud’s deputy the first time around, is expected to take over the captaincy reins for the Demerara team, which also includes the pugnacious Brian Sattaur, a patient Andrew Gibson, Devon Lord, Kemol Savory and Steven Sankar, who all have first division experience under their belt. But the same can be said for several other players from the three teams, such as GT&T Berbice’s skipper Shawn Pereira, who had also led Guyana in the Regional Under-19 tournament last year, his compatriots Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, Shailendra Shameer, Martin Pestano-Bell, Ricardo Adams, Sharaz Ramcharran, Bernard Bailey, Dexter George and others. Such names would surely make this tournament, which is for players born on or after September 1, 1994, an interesting one, once the weather permits the action to get under way, since it is being used as a yardstick for the GCB’s junior selection panel which is being led by Nazimul Drepaul, to select the national Under-19 team. The second round of matches in the three- day format will bowl off next Tuesday 25th to Thursday 27th, with GT&T Berbice facing Essequibo at DCC, while the Everest ground is pending for the President’s XI versus Demerara encounter during the same period. The final round which takes place Saturday, June 29 to Monday, July 1 pits GT&T Berbice against Demerara and President’s XI versus Essequibo, with both DCC and Wales Community Centre grounds, tentatively set to host these matches. Tomorrow’s action at Everest will be supervised by Shannon Crawford and Cyril Garnath, with D. Nagasar as the standby, while Colin Alfred and Imran Moakan will call play in the contest at Police, with Zaheer Mohammed as the standby. Following the completion of the three-day action, the teams will swing into gear for the limited-overs phase of the tournament, for which one match will be played at the Bacchus ground in the Cinderella County of Essequibo. The coach is Quason Nedd and the manager is Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis.
