Environment News 11.8.14 Part II: Put Climate Change on the G20 Summit, Abbott There IS No Other More Pressing Issue in the World Today Says Nobel Laureate, Doherty We HAVE to face up to and work out ways to tackle climate change and its inherent health risks, says Nobel Laureate, Professor Peter Doherty and 11 other leading medical scientists, and, to do this, Tony Abbott MUST put climate change on the agenda at the upcoming G20 gathering. In an open letter to Abbott, Doherty and his colleagues called on Australia to take a “strong lead” in reducing CO2 emissions or risk major impacts on public health. “Adverse health outcomes related to climate change are already evident in many regions of the world,” the letter states. “By mid-century serious health risks including heatwaves, water shortages and the spread of disease carrying mosquitoes are likely to be widespread.” The experts also stated that “mismanagement of the world’s climate and environment is weakening the foundations of health and longevity”, and called on Abbott to embrace clean energy technology. “This issue warrants urgent consideration at the G20 meeting,” the letter reads. “The health of present and future generations is at risk from ongoing human-induced climate change.” Unlike previous G20 meetings, the upcoming gathering of the world’s leading powers in Brisbane will not have climate change on the agenda with Abbott putting economic growth as the primary focus instead. (He obviously doesn’t see or is ignoring the HUGE connection between say…water availability and heatwaves and, oh, I don’t know…growing food.) Australia, meanwhile, has NO policy to reduce carbon emissions and Abbott is doing his best to get rid of any body or agency that could help ameliorate the HUGE elephant in the room that IS global warming. theguardian/world/2014/aug/10/tony-abbott-under-pressure-to-put-climate-change-on-g20-meeting-agenda
