Environmental News 5.8.13, Part II: China – A Heady Mix of Pollutants, Dry Heat and Sinkholes Between the searing heat, the murderous air and water pollution, the sinkholes, and now the drought that’s drying up rivers and streams along the Yangtze, China has become one of the most challenging places to …exist in the world. Hundreds of lakes and rivers along the Yangtze have dried up due to a severe and prolonged drought, and figures released yesterday by the Hubei Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters showed that 900 reservoirs and 132 rivers have been affected by the drought, causing one-third of the province’s farmland to dry up. Hubei, in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, is known as the “province of a thousand lakes” for its abundant water resources and, the Yangtze River valley is a major rice-producing area. This drought will likely hit output, according to analysis by flood control officials, and local authorities are being told to prioritize water use for local residents and livestock.
