Epilepsy Awareness Month!! 💜💜 Ever heard of a seizure-alert dog? Scientists have agreed that dogs are able to smell the chemical body change in a person just prior to and during a seizure. Why does this help an epilepsy patient? Many times, you dont get warnings before a seizure. They just hit you. Now imagine you have a hot cup of coffee in your hand, your in the shower, your walking down the stairs, your lifting weights or your driving. An seizure-alert dog is able to give you notice that something is about to happen so you have time to lie down and get in a safe place. It also alerts the patients family to start to prepare for an episode. One foundation that I admire is 💜4 Paws For Ability💜 which provides seizure-response dogs to children with epilepsy. While there are many benefits to children having seizure-response dogs, I find it most incredible that some children begin having fewer seizures when their companion enters the home.
