Epiphany today, while at work this morning. 10-24-14 So … my station at work includes the responsibility of directing new and long time customers to the new service entrance at an auto dealership. Some of us are more resistant to change than others, as we all know. Right? My very simple job can get very interesting at times. I had an older person to redirect on this morning and for me to invoke “older”, 75 is the minimum qualifying age. At first impression, this gentleman was a solid five stars on the crusty meter. He was a real doozy. Barnacles a plenty. As I got he and his vehicle settled and handed him over to the service advisor I mused discreetly to my colleague, “Ill buy lunch if you can get this one to smile.” Five minutes later, as sir crusty started to wander off in the direction of the customer lounge, he suddenly turned to face me directly and walked straight towards me … with a big smile on his face. I met him halfway and he let out with this; “Is your father John Keeffe (passed on for four years now), the dentist?” I said yes. He said, “Your father was my dentist for life until he retired. He was a special guy. I was a very difficult patient with a bad gag reflex and he knew just how to handle me and get the job done.” Sir crusty said this with a big smile on his face. With my eyes welling up a bit I shook his hand and thanked him for taking the time to share this with me. I owe my colleague a lunch! And for desert ... some humble pie.
