Episode 1. Golan Heights saga, its inception and How our soldiers dilemma started? We had always been hearing about the high praises our soldiers have been accorded since the early days of Peace keeping duties in 1978. However, what we heard about our men who have been abducted by the rebels in Syria, paints a completely different picture from the norm. Here, we see, incompetence, unprofessionalism, lack of leadership, ease of the takeover, instead of the professional, highly trained, dedicated reputation of our Fijian military warriors. We need to ask a few questions in order to have a better picture of what is actually taking place amongst our once re-known and exalted Fijian soldier. UN had barred Fiji Troops. In 2008, because of the involvement of the same Fiji troops in the December, 2006 coup, the UN had stopped any new engagement of troops or increase in the number of troops, the Fiji military had already been assigned. However, the Syrian assignment came about just recently in late 2013, after the Russians pulled out of their position, What we should be asking is how can Fiji secure this “new” assignment after the UN had said what it said in 2008? When we put the magnifying glass on the movement of Bainimarama, we find that he went to Russia, a few months before the troops were sent to Syria in 2013 to replace the Russian contingent that was in the Golan Heights. So how did this come about considering the UN ruling about the Fiji troop involvement in UN assignment?
