Erich Maria Remarque (1898 --1970), born Erich Paul Remark, was a German author whose best-known novel is All Quiet on the Western Front (1928). Remarque, who was a German veteran of World War I, describes the German soldiers extreme physical and mental stress during the war, and the detachment from civilian life felt by many of these soldiers upon returning home from the front. The book and its sequel, The Road Back, were among the books banned and burned in Nazi Germany. It sold 2.5 million copies in 22 languages in its first eighteen months in print. It was made into a 1930 movie starring Lew Ayres. Remarques 1936 novel, Three Comrades was made into 1938 movie starring Robert Taylor and Margaret Sullavan.
