Escaping from death to death - When Civilians cannot find a safe place gnrd.net/seemore.php?id=438 The Global Network for Rights and Development (GNRD) calls for an immediate cessation of the Israeli military operations in Gaza since it is becoming clearer that the civilian population is within the operation’s scope. GNRD has been keeping a close eye on all violent clashes between the sides, and expresses its grave concern about the media discourse, which has become prevalent especially among politicians; to accept the killing of civilians. The international community has a responsibility to intervene and help prevent these grave human rights violations, yet its current silence is consequently helping in the deliberate forcing of the Gaza Strip into hunger, poverty and disease. It became immediately apparent that the warnings used by the Israeli government amongst the civilian population were inadequate; civilians are running from death to death, and the Israeli operations do not provide or allow for a safe place anywhere in the Gaza Strip. The Global Network for Rights and Development calls for an urgent, detailed investigation into the flagrant violations of international law towards the civilian population and we encourage the announcement that the Gaza Strip is a civilian residential area par excellence by the General Assembly of the United Nations. An immediate ceasefire has become necessary, in order to allow an opportunity for humanitarian operations. GNRD is gravely concerned that achieving political and territorial gains is the sole priority and that these are being made at the expense of suffering civilians. There are undoubtedly war crimes and flagrant violations of international law; yet there is a greater disaster waiting for the thousands of civilians who are now unable to find safe drinking water, and who face a huge shortage of medicines and the incapacity of humanitarian aid organisations to help deal with the scale of the humanitarian disaster in Gaza. All parties have a responsibility under international law, which they cannot avoid. Further, those carrying out the huge number of raids on civilian homes and on communities should be held accountable under international law.
