Palmyra is home to 10 seabird nesting colonies, one of the last remaining native Pisonia forests, and coral reef flats that support three times as many coral species found in Hawai’i and the entire Caribbean! The Coconut Crab (Birgus latro) is the largest land-living arthropod in the world! This huge crustacean lives on islands in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean, including Palmyra Atoll. Coconut crabs have an average life expectancy of more than 30 years and can weigh up to 10 pounds!
