Essays, formulas, theories, and the like, have very little to an education that would do our students justice. While these things are necessary, they are the central focus of our educational system. I was teaching my student a critical lens essay for the NY State Regents a day or so before she passed away. How irrelevant it all seems now. We spend countless hours teaching things, because of curriculum, that have nothing to do with real life. Career and college readiness they say. How about life readiness? How about real applications to what actually happens in the real world? How about we start teaching what is necessary for our students to have a fulfilling life? Yes they need to know how to write, read, calculate, and formulate, but theres so much more to life. In addition, this past week has made me reflect on who I am as a teacher. My job shouldnt be focused on grading papers and passing judgement on their abilities. The word teacher is a Germanic word meaning one who points out or shows. I want to start pointing out and showing my students life. I want to do more than read essays and discuss stories. Theres so much more I can do to be a better teacher. And it starts by realizing ways in which I can be a better servant to--ways in which I can better serve--my students.
