Essential oil 101 Topic: Safety • Dilute oils when using topically. Average dilution rates are 2%-3%. (Half this for children and the elderly) 2.5% is 2 drops essential oil to 1 teaspoon carrier oil or 5-9 drops essential oil to 1 tablespoon carrier oil. • Do a patch test if you are worried about essential oils causing an allergy or affecting your medicines before you begin an essential oil. Mix a small amount at double concentration. Example if you use a 2.5% ration you would use 2 drops essential oil to 1tsp carrier oil. Double concentration would be 4 drops essential oil to 1 tsp carrier oil. Place a couple drops of your mixture on band aid pad and place on inside of arm. Leave on for 48 hours. If during any time the site around the band aid becomes red, itchy, blistered or inflamed discontinue use. • Some oils may not be safe for young children. RESEARCH safety before using any oils on young children. (Such as peppermint, which is not recommended for children under 6 due to the fact it can stop their breathing.) • Buy oils from reputable sellers. Always research before you buy any oils! • There are possible drug interactions with certain oils. Make sure you know what oils could interact with certain medications before using. • Be aware of phototoxicity. It can occur after you apply an essential oil topically and then go out into the sun. This happens most often with certain citrus oils, such as bergamot, lemon, lime, orange, and angelica. • If pregnant or nursing check if the oil you are wanting to use is safe to use during pregnancy/nursing!
