Etiquette Tip of the Day: When a friend has lost someone who is dear to them, say, Im sorry to hear that your grandmother died. I know you were very close. Dont say, Im sorry to hear that your grandmother died. I know just how you feel. Never assume that you know how someone else feels about a death because you recently experienced the same loss. Every relationship is unique, and so is every loss. If you personally knew your friends grandmother, say something kind about her or highlight a fond memory. Dont change the subject or suddenly remember somewhere else you have to be. Take the time to listen if your friend wants to talk about his or her loss. When people say they wish there was something they could do, just being there and listening is often the only thing and the best thing you can do to help.
