Eureka. After searching on and off for weeks, I have at last found the document I was looking for , though the UN could not make it more difficult to locate. It turns out that there was a UN General Assembly vote and the decision by its Political Committee to admit Israel as a full member to the UN in 1949. The amended resolution was sponsored by Australia, Canada, Guatemala, Haiti, Panama, the USA and Uruguay. The USA, the USSR, Uruguay, Venezuela, Yugoslavia, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Belarus, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Dominican republic, Ecuador, France, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Iceland, Liberia, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Ukraine and South Africa voted in favour of admitting Israel to the UN and thereby recognized Israel. The UK, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, El Salvador, Greece, Siam (Thailand), Sweden and Turkey all abstained. Yemen, Afghanistan, Burma, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Syria all voted against Israel’s admission, with several making impassioned and cogent speeches about why the both the creation of Israel and the Political Committee’s decision was unlawful and contrary to the UN Charter. Yemen noted that “power politics had overshadowed all other considerations.” Lebanon pointed out that the “conditions of Article 4 of the Charter were not the only determining factors for admission to the UN” and added that Israel did not seem willing to “conform to UN wishes and decisions.” Iraq challenged the validity of the Political Committee’s vote and recommended that the matter be referred back to the UN security Council to seek an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice. Egypt said “the whole question of Palestine had been treated in a manner contrary to the principles of the UN Charter and International law. Syria took the position that the creation of Israel “had only been made possible by the use of violent force against the Arabs of Palestine” and said that “Syria would never accept or condone that fact.” When considering the position of Latin American countries, it is important to remember that, at the time, they were all firmly under the iron fist of the USA. Anyway, the UN document is certainly worth reading. un.org/en/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=A/PV.207&Lang=E
