European Championships June 2013 The Tubertini Ireland Team has just returned for the well organised FIPS-ed European Championships in Serbia. The venue was excellent for the event with lots of fish. Four of the Team that travelled had never fished a major FIPS-ed event before but all gained valuable experience for the future. The venue was a huge ship canal just off the river Danube in Novi Sad Serbia, it was about 100m wide and had a depth of about 6m in the middle (the main river Danube in Novi Sad was over 1km wide) The beginning of the week saw the venue still flooded due to high river levels, it was about 1m up and anglers were forced to sit back about 8m on the bank. Anglers were therefore fishing where they ended up sitting on match day and weight of small fish were recorded. By the third day of practise anglers were permitted to wade to the knee so that they could fish the proper pegs, waters levels were dropping 20cm a day so we knew by match day all would be well. Team weights improved steadily over the week with Bleak at 3m and Carrisso Carp at 13m being the main target species. Match day as expected proved to be much harder than practise with many teams opting to fish for bleak. Most were able to catch between 150 to 200 an hour. ( the Serbian 5 man team caught an average of over 500 fish each on the first day in 4 hours and they spent time fishing for bigger fish). The Bleak weighed about 125 to a kilo, (despite our best efforts around 100 an hour was the most we could achieve). We were more successful in catching the Carrisso Carp at 13m although there feeding methods were totally alien to us and we found it difficult to keep fish coming regularly. Our target weight was at least 2 to 3kg (3 to 4kg in E section) per man, which would have given the team a credible result, unfortunately the lack of International experience in catching Bleak and Carrisso Carp meant that we were somewhat off the pace. On the positive side all anglers on the Team worked extremely well together and made huge improvements as the weeks practise developed. All the Team members were a credit to Ireland as ambassadors for the sport and I am very proud of the way they progressed over the week. I noted some adverse comments on social media sites for some quarters, my response to them would be to come and do better if they think they - can the Qualifiers are open the all.
