European Parliaments 18 members demanded that the EU send an observer delegation for local elections, on March 30, due to recent political developments in Turkey. BRUSSELS The European Parliaments 18 members asked the European Union to send an observer delegation to Turkey for local elections, on March 30. Eighteen parliamentarians from different political groups sent a letter to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, and EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fule. They said in the letter that recent developments in Turkey brought to light structural problems on such issues as rule of law, separation of powers, and respect for fundamental rights. Sending an observer delegation to Turkey for the elections was therefore a necessity, they noted. The parliamentarians, led by Dutch Liberalist European Parliament member Marietje Schaake, said that the local elections on March 30 might contribute to reversing the negative course in Turkey, if it is held freely and fairly. Turkey has experienced tensions in the political scene after an anti-graft probe targeted high-ranking figures in the administration and business. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses an illegal organization within the judiciary and police of trying to topple his government.
