European trip day 7 bike day 2; Salzburg to Bad Ischl. All the rides are between 30 and 60 miles with 1500-3500 vertical. Definitely not Butterfield & Robinson (the most luxurious of all bike trip outfitters. Their motto is we do the pedaling for you-just kidding but they dont challenge you at all). Austria has somewhat well marked bike highways that connect all major cities in the country with all others. The problem is that not all the bike paths are paved and furthermore theyre not for bikes only and suddenly you can find yourself confronted by an SUV or a tractor that straddles the road. The gist of not getting lost was to follow little yellow chalked arrows made in the pavement by our guides (you were supposed to guide yourself following their marks), but they obviously overestimated our acumen (photo1) as we got lost frequently leading to mass map checking. Otherwise (2) it was a beautiful day with nice scenery. 3. Nancy and Tim along the way. 4. Bad Ischl, a resort town we found despite confusing directions that led not us but many of the group through a mile long tunnel full of cars oblivious to the concept of speed limit. 5. the view from our hotel room. 6.morning light with morning fog. At the happy hour/meeting following the ride where we get the directions for the next day, there was a lot of sharing of feelings about the need for clearer and more numerous chalk marks, and things subsequently improved, but there wasnt a day that someone didnt get lost. On another positive note, The weather continues to be beautiful in Denver and I was able to go biking this morning and pushed my year-to-date milage on the road bike over 2000 miles (not including the European trip which totalled about 380 miles).
