Eva Marie Fairleigh 12/6/1934 to10/9/2008 Ive heard her described as the best looking gal for three counties over, the smartest person who ever walked through these (the local high schools) doors, and the nicest Mom Ive ever met. I remember her as the classiest lady I knew, an amazing cook who could make Ragu spaghetti sauce taste like authentic Italian home cooking, and a brilliant pianist and organist with the ability to make a technical Bach piece seem to take flight with emotion. She was my mom for forty six years and my best friend for most of those. (I spent some of my teenage years thinking my parents were horrid and being too stupid to know better.) Mom did everything she did well. She was a flawless hostess and taught herself perfect grammar as a teenager living in an area so rural that even the teachers probably said aint. She was quiet, demure, and ladylike, but her sense of humor was wicked: when she switched her Bernese Mountain Dog for mine at the vet clinic the techs nearly fainted because it looked like Sammy had suddenly lost about 25 pounds and become quiet and reserved instead of wild and crazy for no apparent reason! :) Mom was sometimes described as the woman behind the man who started a successful business, and I think thats kind of the way she liked it. But her own accomplishments were great in their quiet way. She never wanted to be in the spotlight, but Im not sure there would have been a spotlight for Dad without her. She hosted business dinners at the drop of a hat out in the country with two little kids and pets running around and somehow gave our dining room table the ambiance of the Ritz on a special occasion. I learned from Mom that warmth and welcome can coexist with class and elegance. For her, it all came together as simply as breathing.
