Evans Horror Movie Round-up Part.. Nah, Im really not paying attention anymore.... The Haunting! If you think even for a second im referring to the remake, unfriend me now. When Catherine Zeta Jones as a lesbian cant save your movie, your in trouble. Anyway... A few years ago, i challenged a horror challenged girlfriend to make it through October by subjecting her to some of my favorite horror flics. I decided Id start off easy though and since Id never seen the original haunting either, I thought it would be a mild easing in to the holiday season. What I didnt take into account is how effective the film still is. Long story short...it creeped the f*ck out of us. The story is simple (im startting to sense a trend in all the horror movies I love).. strangers with various talents stay in a haunted house to try and ascertain whether there are actually spirits in the place. Well, guess what...there are. They dont come in CGI baby form, they come in unseen moans, groans, door creaks, loud bangs and a few pretty good jump scares. What this movie teaches us is that its almost always better to toy with an audiences expectations and that what you dont see is almost always better than what you do see, unless what you do see is Godzilla. He rocks. It also teaches that when you have characters that an audience genuinly cares about and spend time creating mood and tension, then when that all unravels, its a scary treat. There may be a cheesy moment here and there, but for the most part, i was thrust into a much scarier and more satisfying horror journey that I could have expected, so give it a chance and you will be too! Oh and theres zero Owen Wilson in this version too.
