Even if you do not like football you may find this interesting. In the early days of football there was a movement by the progressives to have football banned from college sports. A 18 year old Harvard student named Theodore Roosevelt saw his first football game, November 18, 1876. Years later as the controversy raged Mr. Roosevelt wrote a letter to Walter Camp who many consider to be the father of modern football. ...I personally like foot ball the best, and I would rather see my boys play it than see them play any other. I have no patience with the people who declaim against it because it necessitates rough play and occasional injuries. The rough play, if confined within manly and honorable limits, is an advantage. It is a good thing to have the personal contact about which the New York Evening Post snarls so much, and no fellow is worth his salt if he minds an occasional bruise or cut...I do not give a snap for a good man who cant fight and hold his own in the world. A citizen has got to be decent of course. Later many of Roosevelts Rough Riders were ex-football players in the Spanish American War. Mr. Roosevelt championed for football when he became President of the United States. Compare that with the unmanly attitude of Mr. Obama who said, If I had a son, Id have to think long and hard before I let him play football. Obama has also called for football to reduce some of the violence. Once upon a time when our nation was great we had real men for leaders!
