Even the most rapacious and fastidious commentators in the Abia polity, were unanimous in endorsing the candidature of the irrepressible, indefatigable, cerebral and focused Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu,as he registered his expression of intent for the Abia 2015 Gubernatorial election. This is a gentleman who in spite of his towering, unblemished public service and intimidating academic credentials, still maintains the common touch. Evidence was the massive turnout of the critical mass of the Abia civil society, including workers, market women, students, trade unions, motor / Keke Napep operators, gentry, peasants, professionals, activists, senior citizens who arrived in droves at the PDP Umuahia secretariat to lend support to man that had touched their waking and working lives in more ways than one. As a precocious child sired by enlightened parents, from Umuobiakwa village, Obingwa LGA- who laid much premium to quality education, young Okezie left no one in doubt, about his, upward trajectory in life because in record time he completed both primary and high school ahead of his peers and gained admission to University of Maiduguri, where he pursued a degree course in Bio-Chemistry and subsequently graduated with a high octane, second class upper division. After completing his National Youth Service call up, he again headed to his alma mater, for the Masters degree programme, where he effortlessly combined it with the job of a graduate assistant lecturer. As an erudite young man, imbued with an effervescent thirst to expand the frontiers of knowledge, Okezie Ikpeazu again headed to the University of Calabar for his Doctorate degree program in the same discipline with a bias for Biochemical Pharmacology. Given his cerebral pedigree, the Calabar Polytechnic, head hunted him to join its teaching faculty, even as he swotted for the P.hd, which he successfully completed. And guess who came calling after that? – an investment and financial conglomerate, engaged him to add value to their company. Dr Okezie Ikpeazu never disappointed. Armed with his innate skills of lateral and horizontal management thinking, he was the hub of strategic policy initiatives that repositioned Cash Bond and Investments Credits Ltd. He was not to stay too long in the money market. Like the golden fish that has no hiding place, the academic community came calling. And this time, it was the Enugu State University of Technology that came poaching him as a lecturer grade one. Subsequently he rose to become the head of department, member of the University senate, and faculty research coordinator. Time and space would not be enough to download the prodigious academic antecedents of Dr Ikpeazu .Be it as it , his robust intellectual outputs is resplendent in various learned journals, textbooks on the biochemistry of environmental pollution published both in soft, on-line and hard copies. At a time he was the M.Sc external examiner at the University of Nigeria Nsukka. Having paid his dues as an academic, it was time to seek for other challenges. For a public spirited and eclectic Dr Ikpeazu, known for his altruistic bent of mind, it was time to zoom his sights on a calling that would empower maximally, the welfare of the public good. Unlike “ice cream” politicians motivated by the “come and chop” stirrings of the mouth and belly,Dr Ikpeazu’s raison d’etre of public service approximates to the political philosophy of Thomas Aquinas, that posits; the exigencies of politics, is a derivative of the needs, aspirations, yearnings of the people. The political community is a cooperative mechanism in which the individual members are better served and ennobled. Provide the leadership and the rest is honky dory.
