Even though Alain de Button is an aristocrat, he sometimes gets it right on the big subjects. Here he is on the purpose of literature - explaining why fantasy and writing for an audience are a betrayal of the point of literature and how true literature unleashes the things we hide from the world and allows us to learn vicariously about experiences, like murder or infidelity, which it would be better if we didnt try at home.
