Even though by my Ojibwe friends calendar it is now Iskigamizige-giizis (Maple Sap Boiling Moon), as far as the animals are concerned, it is still Onaabani-giizis (Hard Crust on the Snow Moon). I thought of this during my evening walk tonight with Bella. Shes about the same weight as the average wolf, and I watched as she spread her pads wide and walked across deep snow with little effort. Tonight will be a good night to be a wolf. It will be a bad night to be a deer, whose sharp, hard hooves puncture the crust. It is the way it is, and has always been. But there will be drama tonight, whether we see it or not.
