Even to this day I’m often asked “What was it like in Baghdad?” My answer is always “it was 99% busy work/mundane and 1% pure adrenaline rushing, exciting, and terrifying.” 10 years after the fact, this war documentary surfaced and I watched it for the first time last month. A French film crew follows a Cav Scout Platoon in my unit, 1-7 CAV, during our 2004-2005 deployment. It documents one of our darkest hours (20:15) during that deployment and one of our happiest moments (46:00). The film perfectly depicts the sacrifice every service member makes during a combat deployment. It’s a raw, uncensored, and sometimes graphic view of our time in Iraq. It’s worth watching if you ever wanted to know what it was like and what we experienced during that time. You might even catch a glimpse of me on a day many of us could have done without. Hopefully, in some small way, this bridges the gap between the public’s understanding of what we experienced and the reality of a combat deployment.
