Evening Post, 25 September 1944 INTO PO VALLEY EIGHTH ARMY PUSHES ON GOTHIC LINE OVERCOME LONDON, September 24. The Allied armies in Italy have now almost completely written off the Gothic Line. German casualties in prisoners alone since the Allied offensive began a month ago total more than 10,000. Eighth Army troops, who captured more than 8000, are now fanning out into the Po Valley. They are approaching two small towns, one eight miles from Rimini, on the Adriatic coastal road, and another six miles along the main highway that runs north-west to Bologna. Rec. 10.20 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 24. The defences of the Gothic Line have crashed along a front of 80 miles under the combined assaults of the Eighth and Fifth Armies, says Reuters Rome correspondent. Eighth Army forces, after cutting the Rimini-Bologna road, have reached positions four miles north of Rimini. They were heavily engaged near Torre Pedrera where they took prisoner 300 Germans. Other Eighth Army troops have extended the Marecchia River bridgehead to 30 square miles. The Germans on the Adriatic have not started a wholesale withdrawal, but they are fighting bitterly as they are pressed back. Rec. 12.30 p.m. LONDON. Sept. 24. Allied troops in the central sector in Italy have broken right through to the northern plains, states a British United Press correspondent at Allied headquarters. Fifth Army units, exploiting the break-through north of Florence, are sweeping the Germans before them as they pour down the lower northern slopes of the Apennines. The Berlin radio commentator, Praegner, states that a German platoon took prisoner the whole army of the State of San Marino, which, after British pressure, declared war against Germany. Heavy bombers, light bombers, and fighter-bombers, following the fall of Rimini and of Futa Pass, are pounding road bridges and railway targets in northern Italy in order to disrupt German traffic and create confusion behind the lines.
