Evening Prayer. Near the couch my children lie Whispering my love am I, Lonely at my wakeful prayer While they sleep serenely there. Little hand and mouth i kiss With my gaze of raptured bliss, Counting over for loves sake Every precious breath they take. As a suppliant i kneel ( Though none heedeth my appeal) Venerating them this night Like the truest anchorite; Faith, methinks, overwhelms my soul, That was never prodigal. With a fathers love i yearn, To my son, and God, I turn; In one gaze i capture them, Bliss eternal in a dream. Ahmad-Zaki-Abu-Shadi ( 1950 )
