Every World Cup is a Celebration... I cant limit it just like that because it breaks open seven footballing years that we had at Neriamangalam (Hope the sweet ladies would not mind). Starting at 6th Standard with a disillusioned ball ( some sort of a stuff that once represented a ball) which was meant to hurt our toes, the graduation was relatively fast. Along with an advancing syllabus we kept on changing our playground too....The size of the grounds kept progressing like switching over from simple arithmetic to algorithm; to quietly put it. France 98 was the first world cup that we got to live with at school. I can recount the frenzy that it had created among us..Most of us pretended to be Batistutas, Zidane, Turam and the like (just like most of mallu youth adoring Mangalassery Neelakandan). Even the Study desk and instrument boxes were not spared and those were converted into play stations. Shri. Prashant P S deserves kudos for this innovation (His desk with two tiny pits replicated St. Bernabeu or Marikana stadium with spectators hanging around in tandem). Newspapers were high in demand for TV was a forbidden luxury at hostel and nobody gave a damn to page 3 superstars. Then came the miss of my life time. I remained in the comforts of my two tier bed when France was thrashing Brazil 3-1 in the Finals...I dont remember the cute dreams that had embraced me in that dawn but certainly the forgone privilege of watching a decider.......
