Every couple of weeks, I take special pleasure in seeing New York from the vantage point of the neighborhoods along the Belt Parkway-Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Gerritsen Beach, Marine Park, Bergen Beach, Canarsue. These are not only the places where my daughter Sara and my son Eric spent countless hours playing games and matches and training for top flight competition in their chosen sports, it is where the immigrant Brooklyn I grew up in is being recreated by new arrivals. The groups are different. instead of Irish, Italian,Jewish and Southern Black Brooklynites; we have West Indians, Russian, Mexican, Chinese, Arab and South Asan newcomers. But the immigrant optimism and energy- along with the immigrant angst- gives these neighborhoods a familiar quality and homeyness I no long feel in gentrified Park Slope.
