Every genre of music has its own syntax( in the same way that every language has its own syntax). If you play a musical line on any instrument, you need a starting point and an end point. Then you have to figure out how to create meaningful communication between these 2 points. The beauty of jazz syntax is that it allows maximum freedom during this communication so that the artist can improvise. Improvisation is the cornerstone of good jazz music. The great Jazz pianist & educator Mulgrew Miller illustrates the point by playing Duke Ellingtons standard I got it bad and that aint good, as always with some fantastic Appropriate facies . Enjoy!
