Every hour an estimated 120 people stream into Lagos as new immigrants, according to study, constantly swelling the population of d state currently standing at over 23 million and are currently crammed in a liveable area of 356,861 hectares, of which 75,755 are wetlands. With its strategic position as the nation’s commercial capital, people continually migrate to the city hoping to find work and make a fortune. The ongoing insurgency in the north eastern part of Nigeria has also resulted in some of the displaced victims finding their way to Lagos As these thousands of new immigrants flood into the city daily, the already cramped space for inhabitants get smaller and tempers get shorter. Lagos, as most cities in Nigeria, suffers from an acute shortage of mass housing; and this constitutes the greatest danger in the population growth of the city. Experts predict that if no urgent intervention is made in that area, the bubble will burst and the mutual suspicion and hatred among the mix of tribes would be the catalyst for chaos. Now this should be the agenda of the new administration that will take over in Lagos- URBAN MASS HOUSING. And sadly the present administration and d party APC governing the state have failed woefully in that area. What they v so far succeeded in doing since 1999 is to feather their nests by building houses only for the rich and powerful and not housing units accessible to the masses unlike what we saw during e era of UPN led government in Lagos. So this is perhaps the golden opportunity for the voters to react with their votes by electing people who will rekindle that real true spirit of Lagos and really wake up to the challenge the state is facing in terms of urban housing and infrastructural development to cope with its ever growing population. LAGOS NO LONGER NEED THOSE WHO WILL COME TO FEATHER THEIR NESTS AND GOVERN BY PROXY TO THE BENEFIT OF ONLY A FEW.
