Every movie artist in Africa is becoming a director... Now Frank - TopicsExpress

Every movie artist in Africa is becoming a director... Now Frank Artus too? Oh Gosh! Are there directors in Africa? Or maybe the ones there are, aint creative enough... Perhaps being a director is so cheap... Or our pictures, framing, composition, angles, shot size, movements etc are so basic. Very soon, nobody will contract the services of a director. Even editors become directors overnight... The big question is, what is really the role of a director? What is the difference between Pascal Amanfo directing and Nadia Buari or Nana AMA McBrown directing? Why the need for one to go to school for four years plus coins, to become a director or be on the job for years to become a director when you can be it overnight. It really baffles me... Only God knows the kind of interview and stringent exams I had to write before passing to be enrolled in NAFTI. What was all that for? Did I waste my goddamn time?... Hmmmm. If you ask me, I have one thing to say, No wonder about 80% of our movies only insult the audiences intelligence. No creativity. Same camera angles, shots, static shots, boring shots, stale storylines, mediocre plots and unplanned or no regard for composition. We wanna write, produce and do everything on our own... Well, I dont shift all the blame on the makers of such lousy works. I blame the myopic audience too. They just stay there and imbibe anything. They are the consumers, yet, they dont challenge the manufacturers... Lousy audience equals lousy filmmakers. Crap! About two decades ago when it was made, I still love and enjoy the movie, TITANIC, This is because it was composed by a very well-prepared crew with division of labor and specialization. George Lucas still enjoys royalties from Star Wars and more. No wonder he was the richest director in the past and still at present. Cameron, Michael Bay, Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton, Sorcesse etc. Are all trained in their field as directors. If you find any of them acting, it means they chose to try it. These fortunes dont come by doing the same stuff everyday -- and definitely not by appreciating some meagre market which is by far divided into sects. Lets have a bigger vision and not kill talents. One person cannot do it all. Help build our industry which doesnt even have a name. This is a write-up to inspire all movie makers and lovers, and students and enthusiasts and myself, to think and brace ourselves with ingenuity to take African stories to the higher grounds. We cant sit here and allow Americans to influx Africa to make movies. We cant leave the stories of Africans to be told by some folks who have no idea whatsoever, about the black man. The stories of Africa should be told by Africans. There have been some attempts by some Americans to do a few African stories... If we can prove that we can do worldclass movies, funding will gain some wings to fly into the industry either locally or internationally. To end it all, Ill ask this question, Why should it be a foreigner who had the thoughts to do a movie about the Black Stars $3m appearance fee, when we say we have African filmmakers here, Ghanaian filmmakers here?... In an attempt to answer that, I think we dont have world market plans. That producer is going to hit big time from that movie. He doesnt need to fight for a market. That market has already been created when he announced to make that movie. Feel free to talk if you are inspired as me...
