Every night we dream several times, we do not always remember the dreams but sleep studies have proven that we always dream. Remembering our dreams is the first step toward lucid dreaming & also helps to travel out of body because it strengthens what we call our Alpha Brainwave Bridge, meditation also does this. In non REM sleep we are in predominant Delta brainwave patterns on an EEG, (The deepest we have as humans) & we do not dream because we drop into an unconscious state, so even if you had some brain activity you wouldnt remember it. (Dream Yogis & Zen Monks have been recorded as remaining Lucid in this Delta state, maybe a few dozen people have done this naturally in the history of humanity, they all reported a sense of oneness with the universe, an enlightened state of being. However, with the assistance of sound & Mind machine technology this state is becoming easier to access. (I recorded one incidence of this in my own research using Mind Machines & with an EEG, it was very cool experience)! In the dream state we are in predominant Theta brainwave & this causes our bodies to produce a sleep paralysis so that we do not act out our dreams. We are not unconscious at this point but subconscious & thats why it is possible to remember our dreams, lucid or not. Sleep studies have not revealed that people in Delta Unconscious states dream, I believe that we show far less brain activity? I believe that the exception is in cases of sleep walking. When sleep walking occurs it is because in our unconscious state some people do not maintain the proper level of sleep paralysis so they move about, perhaps there is some dream they are having? We do not currently understand this entirely, at least not that I am aware of. Many have speculated that we spontaneously travel out of body all the way to an astral state (AKA, the Interlife, the area we stage our incarnations & reincarnations from), we do this to recover when our bodies are in an Unconscious Delta Brainwave sleep. People of the New Age mindset have even reported attending classrooms in this other dimension. My own research has shown me that we may attend these classrooms in any meditation deep enough to connect to the collective mindset & I have done so, this is the realm of channeling information. I have no memories of doing so when in an Unconscious sleep, only from channeling. So the real question becomes, do we all naturally leave our body in deep Delta Brainwave Pattern, as we go into our Unconscious Minds each night in between REM sleep?
