Every once in awhile, we acquire books that are held by no other - TopicsExpress

Every once in awhile, we acquire books that are held by no other library in our consortium. Sometimes, it makes sense, but other times we cant figure out why were the only library wanting to have the book on hand. An example of the former would be Letters from Berlin: A Story of War, Survival, and the Redeeming Power of Love and Friendship, by Margarete Dos, winner of this years award from the Colorado Humanities Center for the Book. Its a story about WWII, told like youve never heard it before - from a woman who was only a girl at the wars outbreak, who began the war joining Hitler Youth, and ended it - after the war was technically over - being sent by rail to a Soviet labor camp. An example of the latter would be Kurt Vonneguts most recent book - a compilation of his commencement addresses, called If This Isnt Nice, What Is?: Advice to the Young. Vonnegut is an enduringly popular writer, and was a Midwesterner to boot; his work is very accessible, and most of his commencement addresses are his trademark mixture of funny and wise. We would have thought that a least a dozen libraries in our consortium would have a copy of this book! As of today, though, we are still the only library holding a copy.
