Every summer I participate in a program to mentor Middle Eastern students. This summer I met several from Syria. Though surely they were sponsored by the govt, their explanation of the "civil war" was surprisingly candid: "This is a war between outside powers," they said. "Who?" I said, "What?" "Well the Russians support the government and the Americans support the rebels." This is not a government line. These are smart college kids with a chance to be in the US and spend a month at MSU - they want what all college kids want. To get on with their lives. To fall in love. To have a career. To have a meaningful life. Among other reasons, their explanation is why we should be skeptical of proposals to attack the government. And the Red Cross warns that the humanitarian crisis will be WORSE if there is an attack.
