Everybody has a story. Since I’ve reached the tender age of 57 I realize that a person’s life is a story to someone if only to them. A man who lived in my community body was laid to rest yesterday (8/24/2013). Mr. Willie Lee Shivers grow to be a very nice age and since I can remember was a local Barber. He probably cut more heads than he cared to remember and those of us who set in his chair at least once never considered what a wealth of history we were being touched and handle by. If I were a betting man, I’d bet hardly any of us who had the pleasure of being in his presence never took the time to ask of even listen to his story. And if so, probably shared it with very few people! I’m sure his journey was full of details that could fill volumes of books. I’m as sure that the people who shared his life and heard his stories were blessed beyond comprehension. Mr. Shivers live to be 93 years of age. That’s a long time when compared to all the things he may have witnessed and experience. For example; the evolution of the television, telephone, the automobile and even how his hair was cut, up to how he was cutting hair in his last Barber days. Not to mention the transformation of the city he grew to call home. As I close I think about the song I heard not so long ago “Don’t Blink”. It’s a song that tells a story of how fast life goes by and because it goes so fast its saying don’t even blink. Mr. Shivers probably had that same attitude in his later years. 93 years went by it seemed to him at the blink of an eye. So my friend, take in consideration your life and the lives of those in your circle and place value in every minute. Especially those who have been around to see a lot! I’m so guilty of not taking advantage of spending time and making special moments with those I love dearly. Mr. Shivers can’t speak another word on this side but reading about his death spoke loud and clear to me. Find the time to share precious moments until I’m laid to rest like he did and just maybe if I live to be close to Mr. Shivers age when he gave up the ghost, I would have been on the positive and not the negative side of spending time wisely.
