Everyone needs to remember that with any deployment there are rumors that run rampant. I personally have lived with the military life for 35 years. First as a sister, then a daughter when my Daddy joined the Guard and now finally as a spouse (for 21+ years and counting). On top of my personal military life, I also worked at Camp Atterbury dealing directly with soldiers returning home from deployments. I can not remember 1 unit that returned to the U.S. on the date that we were first told. Sometimes we would find out 12 hrs before their arrival that it had been pushed back a day, week, or even a month. On the filp side, sometimes we had 48 hrs notice that an unit was arriving 2 months ahead of schedule. I am not bragging about my military experience but trying to let all of you know that I have experience and do know first hand what I am about to say..... Keep in mind that the only FACT that we know is that the orders cut were for a year. Is there a CHANCE the tour will be cut short? Yes. Is there a chance it will last the full time? Yes. NOONE knows for sure when this tour will end! DO NOT count on this tour ending early. Just because someone with a lot of rank says you will probably leave by ... means absolutely nothing! Do NOT be making reservations/plans for a homecoming party/trip for specific dates. I guarantee that the dates will change many times before their boots hit U.S. soil! On our last deployment (Iraq) the return times changed at 6 times (ranging from minutes to days) in a 24 hr time period. Some of the concern of putting out a specific date/time is over safety to our soldiers, however the majority of the time the actual dates are not decided until the last minute. You need to remember that all decisions of this magnitude comes from DC. Save yourselves a lot of stress, disappointment, money, etc and count on the tour lasting the whole time. IF, and that is a BIG IF, the tour is cut short then it will be an even more happy occasion.
