Everyone who knows me understands how important history is in my life. But this weekend is a bit of heritage overload. My Nolan family parish church, the Cathedral of the Incarnation observes its 100th birthday this weekend. Its where I, and many in my family were baptized, went to Mass, attended school, got married, and many have been buried from that special, sacred place. This weekend is also heritage weekend on both sides of my family (the Nolans & the Thonis), being held in opposite parts of Middle Tennessee. The Irish Homecoming & Picnic in McEwen (Humphreys County) is 160 years old this year. Its the only still active event I know of that its likely my great-great grandfather and grandmother attended. The Swiss Heritage Festival in Gruetli-Lauger in Grundy County is only about 40 years old but it continues to celebrate the Swiss heritage my Thoni family brought over to Tennessee in 1869. I didnt get to attend either festival this weekend (Im not sure its possible in real time to go to both on the same weekend) but I am grateful to have such a wonderful family and such deep roots in Middle Tennessee!
