Everything about Prithviraj, from his choice of a life partner, to his daughters name, has been a point of discussion. The actor had announced the couples decision to name his new born daughter Alankrita Menon Prithviraj earlier on Monday, on his social networking page. However, a volley of comments followed, questioning the inclusion of the caste name — Menon, considering the fact that Prithviraj has always been progressive in his outlook. The actor justified his action in a later post on the same day, saying that he was still against the caste system, and that Menon is just a name for them, and not a caste name. He wrote: To all those who have an opinion on my daughters name... I have publicly spoken against caste system and a society that still holds undercurrents of discrimination by the same... and I feel as strongly about it today and will do so forever. My wife all through her professional career has been addressed as Ms Menon and even today is addressed so by many of her colleagues. Hence, the Menon in Alankrita Menon Prithviraj is JUST a name and it so happens that a caste that once existed (according to me) was called the same. However, the justification has not gone down well with his fans. The parents of the child are entitled to name their daughter whatever they liked but his justification was unnecessary, is the general sentiment. I do not think that you can use a name without taking into consideration its cultural baggage. I dont think anyone would name ones child Hitler, Adolf, Lolita, Idi Amin etc. without thinking about its implications. Frankly, a name cannot remain outside its cultural space, wrote a user, while another commented that the Menon being just a name argument is absurd, and that Prithviraj was unconsciously encouraging the caste system by naming his own daughter thus. A few said that Prithviraj shouldnt pretend to be progressive in channel interviews in the future. Prithviraj hasnt commented any further, and ended his post asking everyone to join in his prayers. Hope that this little girl will one day grow up to be an intelligent, responsible, socially aware young woman. Thank you for all the wishes (sic).
