Everything has been thrown at me, paper boats float past me, but something more direct might hit me and leave its mark. I think the things I write about are the things I cant fight off. -RDD Ray Davies is the greatest songwriter because he writes what he cant ignore. In other words he is REAL, he isnt writing from any formula. When he writes about a character , he gets inside their head and exposes their heart and their motivations. The lyrics to a Ray Davies song dont just start and end with the first and last measure- they are jumping off points - themes of the human condition that in just a few minutes create a fully developed character better than most writer can manage in a 300 page novel. The people in his songs come to life and you KNOW them. They might even be YOU or ME. Thats how good he is!
