Everything the desperate, deranged Putin has done so far with regards to Ukraine, since the outset of the Ukrainian revolution several months ago -- all the mischief hes caused, all the havoc hes tried to wreak in the countrys South-East, all the murderous madness unleashed in Donbass and Luhansk, all the outrageousness and banditry and thuggishness and Hitler-like conduct in the Crimea, all the bluster and the sinister posturing and the dire threats, and all the gratuitous bloodshed -- all of this has been done in an effort to prevent todays event from happening. Putin has gambled away Russias very future as a viable member of civilized nations community in this ill-starred, hare-brained gambit to keep Ukraine weak and corrupt and unfree and in the sphere of the new, totalitarian Russias influence. Hes placed his bet, as ever, on the power of cynicism-buttressed non-freedom -- and, having miscalculated massively, on a global scale, hes lost. Thats how he will be remembered by history, in the end: as a loser, the accidental, blandly vicious ruler of Russia who had turned Russia into an international pariah and had brought it to the very edge of historical oblivion.
