Exactly a year ago at this moment Megan Sparks Bracken Matt Bracken and I were making our way home from U of L Hospital following David Sparks diagnosis earlier that day of Renal Cell Carcinoma. We were coming home after hearing neurosurgeons explain the pre-surgery procedure and spinal surgery he would have the following day. That day was a whirlwind, and we certainly could not have known or been prepared for the year that followed. Since that day one year ago David has had three spinal surgeries, a partial hip replacement, rods put in both of his femurs, a pin put in his left hip, two kypoplasty procedures on his hips, and finally a rod put into his right humerus bone with plates and screws to keep it all in place. He has undergone nasty IL2 treatments, and had eight radiation treatments to his spine. In the midst of all of these things he has pushed himself to relearn to walk two times when most doctors did not believe that he would ever do so. He has spent 133 days in the hospital/rehab. And each time he has returned to work with his passion and love for ministry burning brighter than before. Of course, in the last few weeks we received the news that he would be coming home under Hosparus care with a new prognosis of weeks to live. So, do you know what he has done since coming home? He baptized Wesley Mae, preached at both churches the following week, and has attended meetings in Crestwood two days this week. He is LIVING! We are continually amazed by his spirit for life, the way he is facing each day with continual hope for a miracle, and the love that flows from him to us and to all of you. How do you measure a year in your life? How do we measure THIS year in our lives? We measure it against the love that has overwhelmed us, the hope that has sustained us, and the prayers that have moved mountains in our lives to make for better tomorrows. Life sometimes breaks your heart. It has certainly broken ours. But we know, because you have born testimony of this very truth, God has never left our side. He has sent sustainers to shore us up through every storm. While we continue to ask Him to change this course we are running, we are confident that whatever comes love will prevail through it all. Thank you for loving us in ways we could never have imagined. We have spent this evening with everyone home, laughter around our dinner table, and now...a Kentucky basketball game on TV. And I think those are perfect moments each and every one!
