Exactly one year ago today was my first day as JHU Biology Department’s Budget Assistant. Long story short, I was in a job that wasn’t working out for multiple reasons and point blank, I was miserable. After months of applying and through a miraculous internal recommendation, the Biology Department decided to give this flannel wearing lumberpirate a chance. I’ve held a lot of jobs in my quarter century on this planet, but I’ve never been welcomed with more warmth, treated with more respect and shown more compassion than I have in this job. I’m incredibly thankful to have what I have and am beyond appreciative to work with and for genuinely wonderful people. People who actually give a shit about each other. Who celebrate birthdays as a team, who are willing to lend a hand if help is needed…and who want me to succeed and will offer whatever they can to ensure success. Treat your employees with respect. Show them appreciation when they do something well and help them when they struggle. And if you’re in a position that isn’t working out and you’re trying to find something better, it sounds super cliché but keep on pushing. Don’t give up and apply to every opportunity you can. Impress your interviewers so much that even if you don’t get the job, they’ll remember you and put your name in for other potential positions that come up. I’m a walking example for that one :) And on a less serious note, this is pretty much my job, just with more sandwiches (and actual work) and less singing (but not much less): https://youtube/watch?v=_nM_-CFRBS8
