Exactly one year ago today, we brought home a new foster they called Justice. She had no hair at all due to demodectic mange, both eyes were infected, both ears were infected, her stomach was distended from malnutrition, she had a bladder infection, her teeth were worn down from years of chewing on bars of a crate, and many of those teeth were infected. In fact, about the only thing she had in this world was hope…so that’s what we started calling her. Hope was so terrified of everything that she was even too afraid to drink water from a bowl. We had to let her lick melting ice cubes from our fingers instead. It took three eye meds to salvage her vision, though it will never be completely restored. She had to have nine teeth pulled, one actually creating a fistula, or hole between her mouth and nasal passage. Good thing she had a nursing star like Marcia around to help her! Ultimately we foster failed and Hope became part of lives and I know for me its been a life changing experience in terms of what animal rescue means. She’s a special part of every day and makes us laugh with her antics. It makes us both so happy to see her running in the yard with her brother, sometimes just hanging out and other times chasing squirrels, birds, and rabbits that they’ll never catch. Here are a few pics of Hope from her first year of truly living. We’ll never know her true birthday and I know her Facebook page shows my birthday as hers, but this is the day we celebrate. It’s the day she came into rescue and started a better life. Happy Birthday, Hopey Hope. We love you!!
