Exactly ten weeks ago, I handed Nathan over to a team of people - TopicsExpress

Exactly ten weeks ago, I handed Nathan over to a team of people who planned to change his life. Eighteen hours of surgery, six hours of a second surgery, 29 nights in the hospital, countless doctors appointments, hundreds if not thousands of blood sugar checks, thirty three at home medications (not including tube feedings and TPN), eight tubes and drains and 80 nights away from our own beds and he is on his way to getting his life back. Nathans appetite is doing well, but he definitely follows the my eyes are bigger than my stomach rule theory. Last night, after the Winter Carnival Glow Parade, we went to Buffalo Wild Wings and as you can see from the pics below, he ordered 16 wings and ate five. He will be enjoying leftovers for a few days. Watching him enjoy food is truly a blessing. He is not without continued nausea and some pain. He is still taking medications for those and will for some time. As the doctors remind us constantly, it has only been ten weeks. They have told us that recovery takes an entire year. We are just in a hurry! Nathan had is first islet cell test done today. This was a two hour test where they give him a high carb drink and then draw his blood every twenty minutes for two hours. At the end of the two hours, Nathans blood sugar was 108. They were very impressed. He will have another test on Monday, but one that is more stressful to his islet cells. They will try to get his blood sugar up over 200 (which he has never had) and then they will draw blood very frequently. These tests will give us a good idea of how his islet cells are working. If todays ending blood sugar is any indication, they are doing great. This week we had the opportunity to pay it forward. We have been blessed by so many people helping us out through this journey that we thought we needed to repay a little. We donated eleven cases of Nathans left over tube feeding to a twelve year old boy in South Carolina. We also had thirty feeding bags left over that went to a 5 yo in Texas. Once the equipment and medications are in our house, the companies will not take them back. We are happy to see them all go to good use. We have doctors visits Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Our last appointment is Wednesda. Between all those appointments, we will be packing our bags, because they tell us that if all goes well, Nathan will be discharged to go home. We hope to be on the road to home by noon on Wednesday!
