Examining PhDs BS Chowdhry goes to Ireland Engr. Prof. Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology has been invited by Electronics Department, University of Limerick, Ireland as an External Examiner to conduct PhD examination of Mr. Sven Zacharias of his thesis on “Effects, Classification and Mitigation of External Interference in IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless Sensor Networks at 2.4 GHz”. The researcher Sven Zacharias has summarized his PhD work – Low power wireless transmission technology behind Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and ZigBee. Since IEEE 802.15.4 is a low power technology, the mitigation of interference is vital to conserve energy and to extend devices’ life. Most IEEE 802.15.4 radios operate in crowded 2.4 GHz frequency band, also used by many other technologies. A complete study of common sources of external interference, namely IEEE 802.11-based Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), Bluetooth and microwave ovens, is provided. The effects of these coexisting technologies on IEEE 802.15.4 are investigated and modelling of the interference is discussed. Possibilities of energy detection, feature behind received signal strength indication and certain clear channel assessments are evaluated. Based on CCAs, a lightweight interference classi?cation algorithm is presented to classify the common external sources of interference in the 2.4 GHz frequency band without demodulation of the inteferers’ signals. As the classi?cation algorithm relies on time patterns instead of spectral features, it has no need to change the channel. Thus, it allows radio to stay connected to both channels while the interferer is classi?ed. Plus, interference mitigation strategies are reviewed and evaluated about their effectiveness to overcome three external sources of interference. By combining the interference classi?cation algorithm and chosen mitigation strategies, Interference Aware Self-Adapting Medium Access Control is developed. This smart interference mitigating MAC protocol is implemented in ContikiOS and evaluated. Prof Chowdhry has rich experience in diversified fields like electronics, computer systems, telecom, microprocessor technology, intelligent instrumentation, wireless sensors, telemedicine, e-commerce, remote sensing, computer application and system optimization; project appraisal, supervision and management; policy, planning and implementation of programs and strategies etc. He has so far supervised/ co-supervised 7 PhDs and over 50 MPhil/ Masters thesis in ICT.
