Excellent compost workshop on saturday, attended by 20 - farmers, commercial market gardeners, small acreage farmers/lifestylers, home gardeners and a celebrity chef. We made charcoal and a compost heap using sawdust, goat house bedding, thistles and other plants, and 500kg of fish waste. The heap reached 67 degrees on day three indicating the C:N ratios are about right and its 68.8 today, day 4. Ill turn it tomorrow and add the pulverised charcoal and 75 litres of sea water. The sea water is a once only addition and will add vital minerals not present in the other ingredients or soil. Some of the minerals in sea water have been shown to increase the growth of certain bacteria by a factor of 50,000 when present in the correct amount. The addition of charcoal will make this compost super compost and when super compost is incorporated into the soil it has been shown to have the capacity to self regenerating the soils fertility, and research has show the soil where this is incorporated will maintain fertility for more that 1,000 years, based on research into terra preta. When this super compost is incorporated into the soil, cation exchange capacity increases by 100% and crop yields increase by 50% The sea water addition is based on research into the mineral properties of sea water and early research by the Russian academy of sciences research into the formation for chernozem, published in 1939 which I studied about 8 years ago. This compost will be about as good as compost gets - I believe!
