Excellent highlights of a wonderful humor. . . . maybe his tragic end will bring a spotlight to others that are contemplating suicide . . . . . The problem a suicidal person is trying to solve, according to Shneidman, is how to escape from psychache*, which Shneidman defines as “intolerable emotion, unbearable pain, unacceptable anguish … [that] cannot be abated by means that were previously successful” (emphasis added). In other words, from the point of view of someone who is earnestly considering killing himself or herself, the pain from which suicide would provide escape is not temporary it will never end for them without extreme measures. I can only pray that someone who understands this tragic cycle of rollercoaster emotions can come along beside them and share the love, care, and honest sensitivity to this raw situation that I have found in Christ. *Psychache (s?k-?k), a neologism coined by suicidologist Edwin Shneidman,1 is unbearable psychological pain—hurt, anguish, soreness, and aching. Shneidman theorized that unresolved psychache results in suicidal behavior. In almost every case of suicide, psychache is the cause. Psychache stems from thwarted or distorted psychological needs . . . every suicidal act reflects some specific unfulfilled psychological need. An unresolved spiritual conflict would certainly fit this description though it is not suggested that this is the case always or even in this particular situation.
