Excellent training tonight… We always practice Muto Dori at every training session. We focus on mai, “distancing”; always striving to find kami hitoe, 紙一重 “the distance of one piece of paper“. We work with three timings to deal with either one, two or three cuts. We use a fukuro shinai (covered bamboo sword) so that we can cut at full speed. We strive to always be focused on training at a high level…on both the Tori’s AND Uke’s end! BOTH are responsible for achieving the correct distance… Tori should be giving the perception that he can be cut, but in reality he is just out of range (place the head where one can be cut but the feet where one cannot). Tori concentrates on proper stepping to avoid the cut(s) while achieving kami hitoe and then stepping back in, controlling the kukan - at the right moment (the correct opening). The stepping is same as Sanshin no Kata. Uke is focused on achieving the correct distance to actually strike Tori with proper taijutsu behind the cut -forcefully and with power. While cutting, Uke should focus on proper cutting…te uchi is done so that the palms of the hands are over the top of the tsuka of the shinai with an inward ringing motion, the sword is center-lined to the body and contacts the target at an approximately 30 degree angle, with the force of the entire body behind the cut…not just the arms. No line is wasted. In other words, when the cutting stroke is completed, the tip the shinai is positioned to thrust (tsuki) into the opponent…this makes Tori’s task of entering back into a position between the blade and Uke much more challenging. Uke practices cutting freely, in other words, the cuts are not prescribed; Uke can cut with any of the kyuho kiri of his choice with any combination of one, two or three cuts.
