Excerpt from a Oregon Live article, posted by my friends at "Best Fishing In Oregon". Jeers and cheers: Jeers to commissioners of the Port of Astoria for an abrupt attempt last week to quadruple, to $20 a day, the parking fee for anglers at its East Basin launch and a second lot serving the West Basin Marina. Then cheers, to the Oregon State Marine Board, which issued a stern warning to the Port, which has an agreement with the state to hold the fee at $5. If it proceeded, the Port both jeopardized its annual funding (more than $1.2 million over the past 20 years) and could be asked to repay the money. The Port backed off at a quickly called meeting this past Monday. Billed a fundraiser, the action was mostly perceived as a petty, vindictive poke in the eye for the sport community, which recently supported a major shift in the way commercial fishing occurs in the lower Columbia. The shift of gill-nets off the mainstem was vigorously opposed by Astoria-area commercial fishermen, who also influence the Port Commission. Many Astorians, now hosting an intense one-month influx of trailered boats and the strongest salmon run in many years, seemed just as surprised as anglers by the un-neighborly act.
