Excerpt from a conversation with fellow insomniac and friend, Naomi Bütow - my thoughts on the reasons why..... The high incidence of sleeplessness is fast becoming a near epidemic of our times. It has long fascinated me - I have been mapping and watching as the algorithms and patterns emerge. It seems to afflict a range of very specific personality types. One can start plotting the characteristics and intrinsics of the people who suffer from this malady and a definite profile starts emerging. This post-rationalises and/or adds to one of my Hypotheses, related to the fact that we have not, as humans, had sufficient time to evolve and adapt to the extraordinary fast pace of changes and technological advances of the past 50+ years; specifically not to the current pace of renewal, turbulence and change. We are simply not hard-wired to adequately deal with the sheer volume of information, the pace of life and the multiple, competing commitments that we force upon ourselves as well has by the systemic structure that underpins life. In Evolutionary [ theory] terms, we would, as a race, have needed a 100 000 years+ to evolve adequately so as to cope with our current reality. Insomnia is one small symptom of this status quo. Thats as I say, part of a theorem and larger hypothesis that has been in progress for a LONG time now.
