Excerpt from a great book, “THE GREEN BERET IN YOU”, by John Giduck and Sergeant Major John Anderson (RET.) Re-reading it and thought I would share… “We have a lot of rights in America. Among others we have the right to free speech, right of privacy, and the right to never self-incriminate. One of the problems with all of these rights is that we think having them means we need to exercise them all of the time. Though no one will ever take away your right to free speech, how often is what’s said of any value? How often is what we have to say publicly better than the silence everyone would have enjoyed but for our insistence on cramming our verbal rights down everyone’s throat? We suffer an even great problem with an unregulated news media, accountable to no one, exploiting the rights it has been given, virtually free to defame noble people with no responsibility. What is missing in the laundry list of rights all Americans – and others who just happen to fine themselves in our Country – have, is any kind of moral standard by which we should guide the exercise of those rights. After the Constitution had been ratified in 1787, Thomas Jefferson realized the unprecedented freedoms the citizenry had just been handed. He said, “The success of America will depend upon the morality of the people.” Sadly, many Americans have since lost sight of the morality with which we all need to govern our lives.”
